De Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung schreef over Gabriel Lipkind: ‘Met hem is een nieuwe ster aan de Cellohemel verschenen.’ Nadat hij drie verschillende muziekopleidingen had afgerond en 12 hoge internationale onderscheidingen verdiend nam deze ster een sabbatical. Hij zette zijn cello niet aan de kant, maar verdiepte zich nog meer in wat muziek, en de cello in het bijzonder, voor hem betekent. Hij werkte samen met componisten, breidde zijn repertoire uit n nam een aantal bijzondere cd’s op. Vrijwel tegelijkertijd verschenen er twee in eigen beheer uitgegeven cd’s: Voice polyphony, met de Cellosuites van Johann Sebastian Bach, en deze Miniatures & Folklore. De wereld die Lipkind met zijn laatste cd creert kan bijna niet verder af staan van de gestructureerde en bekende klanken van Bach. Lipkind maakte van veel bekende (en minder bekende) korte composities uit de 19e en 20e eeuw zijn eigen bewerking voor cello en piano. Hij liet zich begeleiden door Alexandra Lubchansky, die is opgeleid als pianiste en zangeres. Tegenwoordig is zij eigenlijk alleen nog actief als operazangeres, maar voor dit project van Lipkind schoof ze graag weer aan achter de piano. Het resultaat is verbluff end. Elke noot ademt liefde voor het musiceren en de innige relatie tussen Lipkind en zijn bijzondere cello.

Writing about Gavriel Lipkind, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung noted, ‘with him, the firmament of cello players has gained a new star.’ After rounding off three different music degrees and collecting twelve high-level international awards, this star took a sabbatical. He did not put aside his instrument, however, but rather sought to gain a deeper understanding of what music, and the cello in particular, meant to him. Lipkind worked with various composers, expanded his repertoire and made a number of remarkable recordings. Virtually simultaneously, the cellist’s private label released two CDs: Voice Polyphony, containing renditions of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello, and the record under review, Miniatures & Folklore. Nothing could be further from the structured and familiar sounds of Bach than the world conjured up by Lipkind in his latest release. Lipkind took a host of well-known (and less well-known) short compositions from the 19th and 20th century as the basis for his own arrangements for cello and piano. As his accompanist, he chose Alexandra Lubchansky, who was formally trained as both a pianist and a singer. Although nowadays Lubchansky is more or less solely active as an opera singer, she was more than happy to sit at the piano for this project. The result is amazing – each note speaks of love for music and of the intimate relationship between Lipkind and his remarkable instrument.
